Le lacrime dei poeti
by Francesco Vezzoli
2019
Catalogue of the exhibition 'Francesco Vezzoli, Le lacrime dei poeti', presented at the Collection Lambert in Avignon (2 March - 10 June 2019).
Cy Twombly's paintings and drawings evoke ancient myths with the grace and force of a gesture or a word, while Giulio Paolini's collages and installations are as conceptual as they are sacred, and Louise Lawler's ironic photographs of Greek and Roman sculptures are transported into a reflection on the history of art and the contemporary by Francesco Vezzoli's daring arrangements or sculptures themselves.
Through the sensitive and singular dialogues that these radical gestures weave with the classical heritage, through Francesco Vezzoli's works made from ancient sculptures bought at auction to be transformed, rearranged and completed, we not only learn how different generations of artists have confronted the history of art 2000 years ago, but also sketch out the very idea of the contemporary in art.
