by Ugo Rondinone
1999
Includes a 27 page booklet with essays by Beatrix Ruf, Jan Avgikos and Jan Winkelmann , a bibliography and a list of works.
Ugo Rondinone is a Swiss installation artist best known for his spray paintings and video environments that bear a strong sense of melancholy and alienation. A romantic minimalist, his colourful, poetic works have graced both high-and low-traffic public spaces, spreading inspirational messages of optimism and love.
Echoing Rimbaud's "Je suis un autre", Swiss artist Ugo Rondinone uses the question of identity as a main theme in his multimedia creations. His works are a balancing act of ambiguities - from art to commerce, the fashionably hip to melancholic withdrawal, seduction to rejection.
This book documents Rondinone's activity, presenting a variety of works - diary entries in the style of underground comics; videos capturing the banality of everyday life; hypnotizing circle pictures; clowns; hermetic spatial installations; and monumental brush and ink landscape pictures.
