On the occasion of 'Between Dogs and Wolves', Alexandre Lenoir's sixth solo exhibition with the gallery, Almine Rech Editions is pleased to present the first monograph on the artist.

The work of Alexandre Lenoir explores the versatility of the painted image, based on reworked personal photographs. His lush and mysterious landscapes, often of monumental size, depict scenes that seem to come from dreams or distant memories, in a unique style that lies at the boundary between figuration and abstraction. Using a technique he invented himself, landscapes or characters gradually become silhouettes, a poetic elsewhere as familiar as a dream, a myth, or a memory, where abstraction meets reality.

As Joachim Pissarro writes in his essay, « the artist shines through his own absence. He reveals himself though his own self-removal. Likening the artist to a conductor or architect, Lenoir draws on the formal and conceptual strategies of pioneering avant-garde artistic movements across the art historical canon, ranging from Les Nabis to Fluxus. The works in the exhibition also conjure up the presence of Andy Warhol and Alighiero Boetti in Lenoir’s conceptual, or indeed metaphysical, studio practice. Lenoir’s practice can be called ‘metaphysical’ in the plain simple sense of ‘meta-physics’, meta: after or beyond / physics: nature, presence. Insofar as Lenoir takes his own self, his own presence, away from making the work, his role is indeed meta-physical or beyond-the-physical».

This monograph features "Tape the Sky at the Beginning", an essay by Joachim Pissarro and an interview between Anaël Pigeat and Alexandre Lenoir.

Alexandre Lenoir

Alexandre Lenoir is a French painter born in 1992. Lenoir's work explores the versatility of the painted image from reworked personal photographs. The landscapes or characters gradually become emblematic shapes, a poetic elsewhere as familiar as a dream, a myth, or a memory, where abstraction meets reality. Its variations on evocative forms reveal themselves without allowing us to fully anticipate the final image.
