Printed as a four-color photo-intaglio, Jean Baptiste Bernadet’s photograph Of Things Past (Venezia, 2022) was taken during one of the painter’s numerous visits to the floating city. This edition of 13 + 3 APs), in which colors subtly shift from one print to the next, encapsulates his fascination with the canals—miraculous but impermanent pictorial interfaces between sea and sky, where light blends illusion and disillusion. For Bernadet, the shimmering abstractions generated by this “vast sanatorium of silence and light,” as Marcel Proust called it, constitute an endless provision of vision that fuels his paintings.
