The Surface of the East Coast, from Nice to New York

2017
The exhibition 'The Surface of the East Coast, From Nice to New York' was held at Chantier 109 in Nice, from 24 June to 15 October 2017. This exhibition was born out of the establishment of formal comparisons between certain creations from the contemporary American scene and the French Supports-Surfaces movement of the late 1960s. The presentation of works by twenty-four French and American artists establishes an imaginary axis between southeastern France, where most of the members of Supports/Surfaces originated, and the East Coast of the United States. The respective contexts differ in every respect. And yet, in addition to their similarities in terms of their plasticity, their creations seem to respond to similar questions revolving around the very definition of the work, and what constructs and constitutes it.
