Merci Raymond
by Bertrand Lavier
2016
After having exhibited and produced some of the most audacious artists and artistic projects, the Monnaie de Paris, true to its DNA as a creator of precious exhibitions, brings together two major figures of contemporary art and gives Bertrand Lavier carte blanche to pay tribute to Raymond Hains.
Raymond Hains (1926–2005), a brilliant, free-spirited and mischievous mind who claimed to be “the minister of his own culture”, is here both celebrated and playfully challenged by Bertrand Lavier. In each of the exhibition’s twelve rooms, Lavier revisits Hains’s masterpieces. These twelve nods see Bertrand Lavier confronting, provoking and playing with Raymond Hains’s works, as well as with his own. In this exhibition, where poetry competes with the absurd, visitors will encounter references to beer, skiing, Matisse and Picasso.
