Sylvia Ong’s debut exhibition at Almine Rech, The Light Between Us, explores the profound question, “Can art illuminate hope in the world?” This captivating series of paintings is paired with an evocative six-track EP by Polish composer Joanna Bieńkowska, known as YANA. Renowned for blending classical instrumentation with electronic textures, YANA has created a cinematic and emotional soundscape that mirrors the thematic depth of Sylvia's artworks.

The EP begins with Departure, a reflective and melancholic piece featuring luminous piano and subtle electronic textures, setting the tone for introspection. The second track Natsukashii, inviting us to reflect on our warmth and fondness for past memories, bringing a gentle smile as we wonder where it will lead us? Following the third track Guiding Light, transitions into deeper emotional territory, weaving ethereal strings and rhythmic layers to symbolize renewal and hope - mirroring the interplay of light and darkness in Sylvia’s diptych paintings. As the album unfolds, it gradually shifts toward lighter and delicate piano melodies. A Song for Solara II & III feels heartwarming features dynamic piano motifs and bright harmonies that symbolize a sense of personal awakening. The closing track, Good Morning, Midnight, brings the EP to a warm, jazzy resolution, leaving listeners with a sense of solace and optimism. "A degree of hopefulness is important” says the artist Sylvia, emphasizing the importance of optimism in their collaboration.

Together, the tracks form an immersive soundscape that beautifully complements Sylvia’s artistic vision. The Light Between Us is an atmospheric exploration through the emotional landscapes of the human experience. YANA's ability to combine rich melodies, string arrangements with subtle electronic elements creates a soundscape that is both haunting and uplifting. On November 14th, 2024, the collaboration Sylvia Ong x YANA presented a very special live performance at Almine Rech Gallery in Brussels. Beautifully mixed and mastered by Maciej Milewski in Poland. Vinyl cut and and mastering by Andreas (LUPO) Lubich. As part of the collaboration, Almine Rech Gallery supported the production of a limited-edition vinyl record, featuring YANA’s EP.
